Not a great deal of enjoyment there! The occasional claudication made it more hard to do a lot, so that in consequence I’d become a prisoner to my home and backyard. Exercise was out of this query, my legs just could not deal, but it had been expected that angioplasty to every leg could fix the issue. It did not.
My high blood pressure, I had been assured, may be treated by a cocktail of medication and by weight reduction. The cocktail of four unique medication worked, but I couldn’t appear to get rid of weight.
So I had been given a choice: that the blood glucose levels may be controlled either by medication or by diet. Since I was already taking four distinct medications for blood pressure, I thought it’s best to test diet management. I was also optimistic that this may help me to shed weight. But where to begin? My diabetic nurse supplied me with a blood glucose monitor and stated I must aim to remain beneath 9 as my studying. My Doctor said to remain under 7. Now she’s reduced this to below 5. My present long-term studying is 5.3. A major drop in the high readings I used to make.
So what exactly did I do? Initially I had been taking blood samples three times every day and was really amazed at just how my blood glucose jumped around. Plain porridge and water, which I totally loved, could generate a reading of 16 and yet, being a slow launch multigrain, I’d always assumed it’d be beneficial for my health. Just one apple, revealed a reading of 12!
The first learning point was that the body requires water and a lot of it. Out went sugared carbonated beverages and in arrived plain boiled water. The Swedes call it Silver Tea, I am told, and it’s extremely refreshing. Presently a cup begins daily and 2 or three more follow. Low carbohydrate tonic water can also be helpful (that the quinine helps prevent cramps), mineral water (I particularly like carbonated types), very low calorie Ginger Beer and cold filtered tap water.
The second, critical, learning stage: control your carbohydrate consumption, in my instance to below 40gms each day. Reading the food labels is a true eye opener!
Rather, increase your consumption of vegetables and very low carbohydrate foods & veggies. Add seeds and nuts into your diet, again in smallish quantities.
A couple of glasses of red wine per day are okay.
Avoid processed foods as far as possible and definitely do not eat hydrogenated fats of any type. They have been to my mind a food business. And of no use for some one besides producers of processed food.
Buy only real, non-reconstituted lean beef, poultry, fish and game. Lower your saturated fat consumption by cooking on a griddle and cutting off some surplus fat. Cook with nut and olive oils, since these polyunsaturated fats are good for you. Add match to your own repertoire of components, together with loads of white and oily fish like salmon, haddock, tuna, swordfish, salmon & kipper.
I still find that I miss eating plain vanilla, vanilla ice cream and assorted cheeses. But then I sometimes do give myself a little cure – supplied I stay inside my allowance.
The results are great for the health:
My good cholesterol is high
My bad cholesterol is low
My type II diabetes blood sugar is well controlled by diet alone
I have lost 10 lbs in weight.
My next job is to get rid of another 30 pounds. I understand today that this is attainable. The more weight I lose, the more capable I am to increase my activity levels – and also the more incentive I need to restrain my calorie consumption. At last I believe I’m getting back control of my own body and finding that you really understand what you eat!
